Team Orange Dominates in 9-1 Game 2 Win of Orange & Gray World Series
With runners on first and second in the top of the third, senior Steven Lancia turned on an inside fastball to hit a 3-run home run to break open a 1-run game and propel the orange team to a 9-1, 5-inning victory in game two of the Orange & Gray World Series on Thursday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Orange now leads the 3-game series 1-0-1.
Orange jumped out with a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when both senior Milo Behrens and sophomore Evan Janner sprinted home on dropped third strikes.
Gray cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Derek Almeda brought home graduate student Jacob Sanchez with a double to deep right field.
Orange erupted with a 4-hit inning in the top of the third, including Lancia’s 3-run blast after singles by senior Hank Warren and junior Thomas Williams.
Orange lengthened their lead in the top of the fifth with four runs, starting with Janner drive home Behrens, who reached base on a walk. Later in the inning, graduate student Erick Martinez hit a bases-clearing double to bring in freshman Orlando Samaniego, junior Steven Oliva, and senior Austin Stracener.
The Orange & Gray World Series concluded Friday at 6:30 p.m.
