State Emergency Response Resources Activated

Governor Greg Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources ahead of an increased severe weather threat across the eastern half of Texas beginning today.

“Texas is prepared to deploy all necessary resources to help local officials respond to severe weather threats,” said Governor Abbott. “As Texans and out-of-state visitors begin traveling after the Christmas holiday, it’s crucial that everyone regularly monitor road conditions, make an emergency plan, and heed the guidance of state and local officials. I thank all the emergency response personnel for their work this holiday week as they help their fellow Texans during these storms.”

According to the National Weather Service, severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions of North, Central, East, and Southeast Texas beginning today. Risks through the weekend include large hail, damaging winds, possible tornadoes, and heavy rainfall resulting in flash flooding. Minor river flooding is possible over the next several days, with the threat subsiding early next week.

At the direction of Governor Abbott, TDEM has activated the following state emergency response resources to support local emergency operations:

• Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1): Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads to assist with flood rescues

Additionally, the Governor directed TDEM to place the following resources on standby for activation if needed:

• Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2): Type 3 Urban Search and Rescue Teams
• Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force): Severe Weather Packages
