SpaceX Brownsville “Rio West”
SpaceX has outlined plans to establish a bustling commercial hub, dubbed “Rio West,” at an estimated cost of $15 million in close proximity to Starbase. This development initiative encompasses a diverse array of amenities, including a grocery store, retail outlets, and a cozy café. Notably, the restaurant component of “Rio West” is set to feature both indoor dining facilities and an expansive outdoor deck that offers sweeping views of the picturesque Rio Grande.
Commencing in March, construction endeavors are poised to kick off, with an anticipated completion timeframe slated for December 2024. Concurrently, SpaceX is also forging ahead with the construction of a substantial office complex and industrial factory near Starbase. The groundbreaking for this ambitious project took place in February, with a scheduled completion date earmarked for January 2025.
Moreover, a pivotal development in SpaceX’s expansion strategy involves a proposed land swap with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. This exchange would entail SpaceX acquiring 43 acres of land adjacent to Boca Chica State Park, while in reciprocation, 477 acres of land approximately 10 miles south of Boca Chica near Brownsville would be allocated to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. The primary objective behind this proposed land swap is to facilitate SpaceX’s expansion efforts at the Boca Chica site. However, it’s important to note that despite SpaceX’s proposal, the actual acquisition of the property is pending. Furthermore, none of the involved land parcels currently provide public access to Boca Chica State Park.
Moving forward, crucial steps including an exhaustive environmental assessment and consultations with pertinent agencies are imperative prerequisites that must be fulfilled before the land swap can materialize. These measures underscore SpaceX’s commitment to responsible and sustainable development practices as it navigates the complexities of expanding its operations in the region.
