Help keep first responders safe over Labor Day weekend

TDLR Public Service Announcement Urges Drivers To Slow Down, Move Over For Emergency Vehicles On The Roadside

AUSTIN – As Texas drivers hit the road for one last summer adventure over the Labor Day weekend, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) reminds drivers that they need to slow down by at least 20 miles per hour or change lanes away from emergency vehicles parked on the side of the road with their emergency lights activated.

In a public service announcement produced by TDLR, Austin tow company owner and TDLR Tow Advisory Board member Tasha Mora shares an emotional reminder to do your part to keep emergency responders safe.

“I have attended funerals of tow truck company owners who were husbands and fathers and grandfathers,” Mora said. “We’re asking you to help save our lives. Move over or slow down when you see a tow truck on the roadside.”

Texas’ Move Over or Slow Down law requires drivers to change lanes or reduce their speed to 20 mph below the posted speed limit when passing a first responder stopped on the road with activated overhead lights – that includes tow trucks, police cars and fire trucks.

Large numbers of travelers are expected on Texas roads this holiday weekend, which means more breakdowns and traffic stops are likely as well. Drivers should pay attention to what’s happening around them and prepare to react quickly.

Failure to follow the state’s Move over or Slow Down law could result in hefty fines and possible jail time.

TDLR licenses tow operators and tow companies in Texas, and regulates driver education/driving safety courses, and motorcycle/ATV safety courses.
