Golf Programs Raise Nearly $45K at Golf Classic

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Tuesday that the men’s and women’s golf teams raised nearly $45,000 to support Vaqueros student-athletes during the UTRGV Golf Classic, presented by D. Wilson Construction, on Monday at Champion Lakes Golf Course, the home of the Vaqueros Golf Center.

The golf classic featured 120 participants on 30 teams taking part in a 4-person scramble. Two teams tied for the lead with a 17-under 55, including Team Morgan LaMantia, led by Ethan Galvan, Raul Gonzalez, Rene Lopez, and Rickie Sanchez, which won a free round for four at La Cantera, and South Texas Commercial, led by Pablo Bocanegra, Chris Coleman, David Oliveira, and Lalo Villarreal, which won a trip to a Dallas Cowboys game, courtesy of RGV Tours.

MAH Financial, led by Alex Cortez, Carlos Lopez, Jaime San Miguel, and Albert Uriegas, finished third with a 15-under 57 to win the use of a suite at a Vaqueros baseball game, donated by South Texas Commercial.

“It was a successful year two,” UTRGV Head Men’s Golf Coach Houston Moore said. “We are extremely grateful and would like to thank everyone for their incredible support and generosity. The support we receive at this event makes a direct impact on UTRGV men’s golf. Everyone’s contributions have helped us elevate this event from the last and we hope to continue growing in the coming years. The UTRGV Golf Classic is extremely grateful for our presenting sponsor, D. Wilson, and their generosity. We would also like to thank G3 Scrap Metal, Vaquero Outfitters, L&F Distributors, Reyna’s BBQ, and 7 Day Addiction for their donations and support. See you all next year and V’s up!”

The UTRGV Golf Classic, presented by D. Wilson Construction, included breakfast from Reyna’s BBQ, midround ceviche courtesy of G3 Scrap Metal, Taquiza lunch provided by Vaquero Outfitters, hospitality courtesy of 5×5 Brewing Co. and L&F Distributors, and prizes from Wing Barn, de Sanchez Spa + Salon, and Killers Golf for the closest to the pin and longest drive competitions.

“The success of our golf classic speaks volumes about our community’s spirit and drive to create the championship culture that is being shaped by UTRGV Athletics,” UTRGV Head Women’s Golf Coach Bryan Novoa said. “Our student-athletes are beyond grateful for the opportunities that are being created by all of our sponsors and those that played yesterday.”
