City of Mission Local Elections Will Be Moved to November

MISSION, Texas – The City of Mission is pleased to announce the successful passage of Senate Bill 447 during the recent legislative session, which will allow the city to move its municipal elections to coincide with federal, state and other local elections in November.

Mayor Norie Gonzalez Garza thanked the Legislature and the Governor for granting the wishes of local constituents, who voted by a landslide, over 77%, in a May 2024 referendum election to change the election date. Mayor Garza traveled to Austin to meet with lawmakers and testified before the Senate State Affairs Committee and House Elections Committee to advocate for the bill during the session.

“I want to thank the Legislature for passing and Governor Abbott for signing this bill, which will provide meaningful change for voters in the City of Mission,” Mayor Garza said. “Our voters in Mission are better served by moving our elections from May to November. The reality is that voters turn out in substantially higher numbers in higher-profile federal and state elections.”

“This bill will have a meaningful impact on our voters and empower them to have a greater voice in representation and accountability. Once again, I want to thank the legislature and Governor Abbott for their support for this important piece of legislation,” the mayor concluded.
