Brownsville, BISD, And Gladys Porter Zoo Move Forward With Expansion Project
The City of Brownsville, the Gladys Porter Zoo, and the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) have taken a significant step toward enhancing the zoo’s future as a world-class attraction. Following unanimous approvals from BISD’s Board of Trustees and the Brownsville City Commission, the city has officially purchased the former Cummings Middle School campus to extend the zoo.
This agreement, now part of an amended and restated interlocal agreement, includes a lease agreement and a real estate contract between the school district and the city. This strategic alliance is set to create a synergy supporting educational and community goals, further enriching the Brownsville area.
“I am very pleased to announce that the city and BISD have agreed to the purchase of Cummings Middle School for the zoo expansion,” said Mayor John Cowen Jr. “The Gladys Porter Zoo, in my opinion, is our number one asset as a community. We are so blessed to have a world-class zoo for our families, our residents, and visitors to come and enjoy.”
The project is expected to receive support from the city’s Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC). Beyond expanding the zoo, this collaboration aims to enhance educational opportunities for the community further, making the zoo a hub for learning and recreation for residents and visitors alike.
