Presentation on McAllen ISD school buildings set for Tuesday
McAllen ISD has a free presentation on the state of its school buildings planned for Tuesday, October 28. The public is invited.
The Community Town Hall event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the UTRGV McAllen ISD Collegiate Academy (801. East Lakeview Drive) in McAllen.
The district has been systematically assessing each building’s age, infrastructure and other needs. This has been done through MGT – an educational facilities consultant. The district has also collected feedback from its Facilities Forecast Advisory Committee which is made up of about 100 school district officials, parents and community members.
MGT presented its findings at a Town Hall meeting in September and is now poised to give its final report on Tuesday.
At a previous School Board meeting, Estrada Hinojosa, McAllen ISD’s financial advisor, explained that McAllen ISD has the capacity to fund approximately $335 million for facility improvements without increasing the tax rate.
This is possible because of proactive steps the School Board took two years ago to pay down debt faster and strengthen the district’s finances.
During this time, the district’s unassigned Fund Balance grew from $58.6 million in 2023 to $93.1 million in 2024, a gain of $34.5 million. These figures are based on the district’s audited financial statements.
The Fund Balance (which works like a personal savings account) helps protect classrooms, supports staff and sustains student programs for the long term.
