Women’s Golf Takes Second Place at Islander Classic

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s golf team finished in second place at the Islander Classic on Tuesday at Corpus Christi Country Club, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
It is the Vaqueros best finish since finishing in second place at the UTRGV Invitational in the spring of 2023. UTRGV posted a final round 303 to finish with a three-round score of 913.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the event with a three-round score of 900 giving them three points in the showdown standings. The Islanders now lead in the standings 26 to 14. The next showdown event will be at the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Freshman Kieli Saenz led the Vaqueros as she finished tied for second place with a three-round score of 224. Saenz used a final round 74 to climb three spots in the final round.
Junior Jackie Howard Gonzalez finished in seventh place with a three-round score of 226 after posting a final round 78. Sophomore Natalia Rodriguez finished tied for 10th with a three-round score of 231 after a final round 77. Sophomore Preston Saiz came in 16th with a three-round score of 232 after carding a final round 74.
Senior Edinburg High alum Madi Ozuna, who was playing as an individual, finished tied for 30th with a three-round score of 241 after posting a final round 75. Senior Catherine Flores, who also played as an individual, finished tied for 35thwith a three-round score of 242 with a final round 85.
Sophomore Camila Herrera finished tied with Flores for 35th with a three-round score of 242 after posting a final round 79. Senior Maria Jose Ramirez, who played as an individual, finished in 43rd with a three-round score of 246 after a final round 79.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Samantha Gibbs won the individual title with a three-round score of 218.
The Vaqueros will be back in action March 4-6 at the Puerto Rico Shootout at the Palmas Athletic Club in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
