Vanessa Cárdenas Reflects on Powerful Weekend and Two Contrasting Visions of America on Display

Washington, DC — The following is a statement from Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

“This weekend Americans from every city and small town presented a positive, confident, and optimistic embrace of what America stands for. Seven million Americans who peacefully rallied at ‘No Kings’ events across the nation, motivated by protecting the best of American democracy in peaceful, hopeful events.

In speech after speech, and sign after sign, the message from everyday Americans was clear: stop the cruelty and chaos and the authoritarian takeover and restore our democracy and the rule of law.

In contrast, the President and his acolytes present a dark and vile vision of America, one in which people should live divided and in fear of their fellow Americans. Their vision is showing up in the unconscionable ICE military-style raid on a Chicago apartment building; the stories of U.S. citizens and military families and veterans being arrested by ICE; and the growing recognition that mass deportation threatens our economy.

All of this adds up to a sharp set of contrasts and two radically different visions for the nation, our core values, and what we should demand of our leaders.”
