UTRGV Student-Athletes #RISEup to Achieve Significant Academic Success

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday that the department’s student-athletes posted a 3.29 grade point average (GPA) with a record 234 student-athletes earning Athletic Director’s Honor Roll recognition by achieving a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.25 while serving as full-time students as part of a team throughout the fall semester.

The AD Honor Roll recipients will be recognized at halftime of the women’s basketball game against Nicholls on Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

The department’s cumulative GPA now stands at 3.34.

A record 197 student-athletes recorded a GPA of at least 3.50 to earn Dean’s List recognition, including a record 80 student-athletes that finished the semester with perfect 4.0 GPAs.

By percentage, 62.90% of student-athletes earned a spot on the AD Honor Roll, 52.96% earned Dean’s List recognition, and 21.51% recorded 4.0 GPAs.

“We are so happy to see the tremendous work that our student-athletes are doing in the classroom to allow them to excel at such a high level in their academic pursuits,” UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. “The hard work our student-athletes are doing now will set them up for excellence in life. I am grateful for their dedication and that of our academic services team and coaches for their commitment to our student-athletes’ work in the classroom.”

Eleven sport programs recorded team GPAs above 3.25, led by women’s golf, which recorded a 3.72 GPA as a department-best 90% (9-of-10) of their student-athletes earned AD Honor Roll recognition, including eight on the Dean’s List and four 4.0 GPAs. Women’s tennis, which ranked second with a 3.63 GPA, led the department in percentage of Dean’s List honorees (88.89%), and 4.0 GPAs (66.67%). Women’s basketball ranked third with a GPA of 3.62 as 86.67% of the team earned AD Honor Roll recognition, including 60% on the Dean’s List. Men’s tennis, which had the highest GPA among men’s teams in the department, ranked fourth at 3.58 with 80% of their student-athletes on the AD Honor Roll and 50% with 4.0 GPAs, the best among men’s teams. Men’s soccer had the highest percentage of Dean’s List honorees among men’s teams at 74.07%.

Football had a department-high 42 student-athletes earn AD Honor Roll recognition and a department-high 29 student-athletes on the Dean’s List. Baseball had the most 4.0 GPAs with 12 while ranking second in AD Honor Roll recipients (31) and third in Dean’s List honorees (26). Women’s track & field ranked third in AD Honor Roll recipients (29), second in Dean’s List honorees (26), and third in 4.0 GPAs (10). Women’s soccer ranked second in 4.0 GPAs (11) while placing 24 on the AD Honor Roll and 21 on the Dean’s List.
