The 23rd Annual Frost Bank McAllen Amateur Golf Championship

Annual McAllen golf tournament features region’s best golfers
McAllen will once again proudly host the 23rd Frost Bank McAllen Amateur Golf Championship at the Champion Lakes Golf Course, Friday, June 20 through Sunday, June 22, at the famed municipal golf course, located at 2701 South Ware Road. This year’s defending champion is Miguel Del Angel, Jr., from Mission, Texas.
“It has always been our goal to stage a premier golf event, in a highly competitive environment, so that we can attract the best players in our area, our State and even Mexico; we want to give everyone who loves competitive golf a unique experience right here in McAllen” said Carlos Espinosa, Director Champion Lakes Golf Course. “Every year, I really look forward to seeing every competitor perform in this very special setting.”
Frost Bank is the proud sponsor of the 23rd Amateur Golf Championship, which culminates with the awards presentation on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m.
“Frost is proud once again to sponsor the McAllen Amateur Golf Championship,” said Frost Market President Ruben Bosquez. “Sponsoring events like this is a tradition at Frost, and part of the relationships we build in the communities where we operate. It’s our way of saying ‘thanks’ and giving back to our neighbors.”
The tournament is for amateur golfers with an established handicap of 12 or less who have not competed in high school or college golf tournaments during the 24 months immediately preceding the first round of the McAllen Amateur Golf Championship. Members of college or high school golf teams are not eligible. The field is limited to the first 150 registered and paid entries.
“Thanks to our dedicated team and partners like Frost Bank, the McAllen Amateur continues to grow and inspire golfers across the region,” added McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “From supporting youth golf to attracting the best amateur talent in the area, this tournament reflects McAllen’s spirit of excellence and community.”
Once again, the tournament will feature the Kids’ Putting Tournament, starting at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, first introduced last year to help grow the game of golf among Rio Grande Valley young golfers. It is open to both boys and girls, ages 6-14 years old, and they can sign up now at www.mcallenparks.net. This addition is part of the City of McAllen’s continued commitment to youth sports and golf in the area.
Additionally, as part of the celebration of the amateur tournament, the McAllen’s Parks & Recreation Department has been hosting golf programs for local youth, developing talented golf players that go on to play at the collegiate level.
Thanks to these parallel golf programs and a partnership with the local community of golfers, the McAllen Parks & Recreation Department have presented 20 scholarships to local youth to continue playing the wonderful game of golf and developing their skills.
“McAllen is proud to host this tournament once again and showcase our first-class facilities and unmatched hospitality,” said McAllen City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “Events like this highlight the strength of our Parks & Recreation Department and our city’s commitment to quality of life for all ages.”
