Washington, DC — Like many longtime observers of the Trump administration on immigration, we weren’t exactly surprised by the news that the White House is backtracking on Trump’s supposed enforcement “pause” targeted against select industries. Yesterday’s about face on targeting the agriculture, restaurant, and hospitality industry reinforces what we already know – Stephen Miller continues to exert supreme control over immigration policy in the White House.

According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

“Make no mistake: President Trump may be the one sitting behind the Resolute Desk, but Stephen Miller is the one running the show when it comes to immigration in the Trump White House.

As the past few days make crystal clear, Miller doesn’t care about the unpopularity of mass deportation or that Americans are recoiling from watching militarized ICE raids across the country target students, workers, and American citizens; Miller doesn’t care about the costs on key American industries and the chorus of business voices calling for a better way; and Miller certainly doesn’t care about the community outcry from red and blue states alike as Dreamers’ futures are destroyed and deeply rooted families are torn apart.

Instead, for Stephen Miller and the rest of the Trump Administration, those costs and cruelties are the point. And they are looking to turbocharge the mass deportation machine by jamming through Trump’s big ugly bill in Congress and its more than $150 billion in new immigration enforcement that would make anything we have seen so far pale in comparison. All of it in service of Miller’s personal crusade to remake the nation in MAGA’s image through the mass deportation from America of immigrants and anyone he deems undesirable – no matter the costs to the rest of us.”

Of note, national and local media continue to spotlight examples of who the Trump/Miller axis is targeting through their indiscriminate enforcement dragnet – and the targets look nothing like the supposed “invaders” and criminals they like to talk about. For example:

And read Felipe De La Hoz In The New Republic on how the big ugly bill pending in Congress would turbocharge mass deportations. In“The Worst Part of Trump’s Big Bill Is Getting Almost No Attention,” De La Hoz writes:

“Democrats have been largely silent on perhaps the bill’s most ominous characteristic: an orgy of resources for Kristi Noem and Stephen Miller’s shock troops to carry out President Trump’s indiscriminate crackdown on immigration and protest … Trump’s supposed political strength on immigration is proving to be a weakness, and his bumbling deployments in L.A., which seem to be further sinking his popularity, are the perfect opportunity for Democratic leaders to drive the point home, in the process striking not only at the Big Ugly Bill but at Trump’s broader project to make himself look invincible.”
