STC alumni at the forefront of Physical Therapy in the RGV

Through their leadership roles in the Texas Physical Therapy Association (TPTA), South Texas College alumni Sarai Cantu and Lizette Chapa are actively shaping the future of physical therapy in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.

Dedicated to helping build a supportive community where everyone in the field can grow and thrive, their work reflects their passion for making a difference in the community.

“It was our experience at STC that encouraged us to get involved, take on leadership roles and advocate for our field,” said Cantu. “STC truly planted the seeds for what we’re achieving today at the TPTA, and we’re grateful for the foundation it provided us.”

As leaders of the TPTA Coastal Bend District chapter, which includes the RGV, they focus on supporting professional growth, encouraging teamwork and making sure that all physical therapists (PTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs) and students across the region have a voice.

“It all comes from my instructors’ passion and deep knowledge of the field, which ignited a desire in me to strive for more and get involved. STC truly transformed me into the professional I am today,” she added. “Now, as part of the TPTA, I have the privilege of seeking opportunities that benefit not just myself, but also my colleagues, ensuring our professional growth continues after college and throughout our career.”

Cantu, 26, serves as both vice chair and chair of the Continuing Education Committee for the district. Currently, she works at the DHR Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy Institute, a position she earned during her clinical rotation while enrolled in STC’s program in 2020.

Her dedication was evident even then, commuting daily from across the border, where she grew up, demonstrating her strong commitment to her education and future.

“I was raised in Reynosa, and it was during my last year of high school that I first discovered physical therapy,” she said. “It took time for me to fully appreciate this incredible field, but now I’m dedicated to advocating for it and raising awareness.”

Her interest ignited while volunteering at a children’s home, where she witnessed a teenager with a disability receive physical therapy for what she described as “simple actions we often take for granted.”

“That’s what drew me to this field, the chance to make a real difference and help people regain their strength, something so many of us overlook,” she added.

Similarly, Chapa, 27, was unaware of the countless opportunities in physical therapy when she left home to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Texas A&M in College Station.

A former high school athlete, she graduated from STC in 2022 and recently became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), also employed at the DHR Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy Institute.

“I only learned about STC’s program during my last year away from home, and I wish I had discovered it sooner,” she said. “Once I started researching, I realized it had the best reputation. I was thrilled to return and make a difference right at home.”

As the membership committee chair for the district, she is responsible for engaging the community and promoting the association, emphasizing the importance of their work.

“My favorite aspect of physical therapy is education,” she said. “I love teaching patients and the community about the benefits of therapy. It goes beyond just exercise. It can significantly improve quality of life.”

Their relationship with the college continues as they mentor new generations.

Cantu, who graduated from STC with a bachelor’s degree in medical and health services management in 2023, is particularly focused on empowering young professionals.

Through her participation in the exclusive TPTA Tom Waugh Leadership Development Program, she helped develop a scholarship initiative that has already been awarded to a couple of STC graduates.

“STC is truly the most engaged institution out there. They consistently reach out to help us host events,” said Cantu. “Even after graduating, our relationship with STC continues to thrive. We’re both excited about applying for the DPT bridge program.”

Since 2015, STC graduates have been guaranteed two seats each year in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, which offers a two-year and four-month hybrid course with minimal on-campus requirements.

“It’s just another opportunity for us to become accomplished professionals without having to leave home,” added Chapa. “STC keeps providing these opportunities, and I’ll always be grateful for that.”
