Statement From Mayor Norie Gonzalez Garza

I want to take a moment to address the recent heavy storms and flooding that affected our community. While this storm presented significant challenges, I am pleased to share that thanks to the proactive work we’ve done in improving our drainage infrastructure, the impact of the flooding was significantly reduced.
In recent years, significant investments have been made in enhancing our drainage systems to better protect our residents and infrastructure. These improvements, which were carefully planned and implemented, proved to be incredibly effective during this storm. The upgrades to the drainage systems performed as designed, ensuring that floodwaters were managed efficiently and minimizing the risk to homes, businesses, and roads.
We know that certain areas experienced substantial flooding. These areas will be thoroughly assessed to determine the necessary improvements to our drainage infrastructure. Our goal is to implement effective solutions to mitigate future flooding risks for our residents.
I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ever Villarreal and the Hidalgo County Drainage District for their invaluable assistance in addressing drainage concerns within our community.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our Public Safety personnel, Public Works team, and all city staff for their dedication to help safeguard our community from a situation that could have been far worse.
Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time. Please know that we will continue to work tirelessly to keep our community safe.
Norie Gonzalez Garza
