September Marks National Healthy Aging Month
September is National Healthy Aging Awareness Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the positive aspects of aging and highlighting the importance of healthy lifestyle habits throughout life. From staying active to eating well and keeping the mind sharp, this month serves as a vital reminder that healthy aging is achievable at every stage of life.
Staying physically active is particularly crucial as we age, according to health professionals. “Once you get into the older population, you want to really focus more on things like yoga and tai chi to improve your flexibility,” said Julian Monfort, a physical therapist at Valley Regional Medical Center (VRMC) in Brownsville. Monfort emphasized that exercise is important for middle-aged individuals as well, and that the community offers numerous free programs for staying fit.
“If you go to the park, you can do any type of tai chi, yoga, or fitness. Just walking laps is great. They also have exercise options at the mall, where it’s air-conditioned and much easier to stay comfortable. As long as you keep moving, it’s good for you,” Monfort said.
Healthy eating is another essential component of aging well. As we grow older, our nutritional needs change, and it becomes more important to maintain a balanced diet.
“Start by focusing on variety,” said Julian Saldivar, a nutritionist at VRMC. “You want to incorporate every food group to ensure you’re getting all the necessary vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein.” Saldivar offered tips for working professionals who frequently eat out, suggesting that healthier options like grilled chicken or meat should be prioritized.
Saldivar also recommended meal prepping as a practical approach to maintaining a nutritious diet. “Maybe meal prep on a Sunday. You can plan ahead for the work week and have your lunch ready to go. That way, you have more control over what you’re eating,” he said.
National Healthy Aging Awareness Month serves as a powerful reminder that making small, sustainable lifestyle changes—whether it’s getting active, eating healthier, or managing stress—can greatly enhance quality of life as we age. It’s never too early or too late to start making positive choices that support long-term well-being.
