Run, Remember, Celebrate: Día de los Muertos 5K & Festival Lights Up South Padre Island

South Padre Island, TX — South Padre Island will come alive with color, culture, and community spirit as the inaugural Día de los Muertos 5K & Festival takes over the island on Saturday, October 25th. Blending tradition, fitness, and heartfelt remembrance, the event promises an unforgettable evening of “Running to Remember” — and celebrating life every step of the way.

This family-friendly celebration invites participants of all ages to run, walk, or cheer on racers in both the 1-mile fun run and the full 5K, followed by an immersive cultural festival honoring Día de los Muertos traditions.

“We are thrilled to introduce the Día de los Muertos 5K & Festival to our island calendar,” said April Romero, Director of Communications at Visit South Padre Island. “It’s a chance for locals and visitors alike to gather in remembrance, experience rich traditions, and celebrate life through movement, art, music, and community. We expect this to become a cherished annual tradition for the region.”

A Race with Meaning

This event aims to be both contemplative and celebratory — an opportunity for reflection, community, culture, and movement, all built around theme of “Running to Remember.”

Each race registration includes a custom event T-shirt and finisher medal, and participants are encouraged to dress up in vibrant, themed attire. Whether one is racing in memory of a loved one or simply taking part in the cultural celebration, the atmosphere will be as meaningful as it is festive.

Race Schedule:

●       5:00 PM – Festival Grounds Open

●       6:00 PM – 1-Mile Fun Run

●       6:30 PM – Día de los Muertos 5K

Festival Highlights

After the race, the evening transforms into a full-scale Día de los Muertos Festival, featuring:

●       Live mariachi and folklórico performances

●       Face painting and themed photo ops

●       Local food trucks and artisan vendors

●       A community ofrenda (altar) for photos, flowers, sugar skulls, and battery-powered candles
