Regents Welcome Texas A&M University-Victoria into The Texas A&M University System

BRYAN–COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Regents today approved final steps for the University of Houston-Victoria to officially join the A&M System on September 1, becoming Texas A&M University-Victoria, the System’s 12th university.

System leaders also thanked State Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst for her vision and leadership in advancing the transition.

“We’re as excited about this as the folks in Victoria, and they are pretty excited” said Board Chairman Robert Albritton. “The Regents have a clear vision for prudent growth that expands opportunity without sacrificing affordability, and adding Victoria fits perfectly.

“Welcoming Victoria into the A&M System strengthens higher education access along the Coastal Bend and Crossroads, aligns programs with workforce needs, and does it with the fiscal discipline Texans expect,” Albritton said. “We are grateful to Senator Lois Kolkhorst for championing this effort on behalf of students and families in the region.”

Chancellor Glenn Hegar thanked state leaders and local partners for helping advance the transition.

“This is a win for students and for Texas,” Hegar said. “We appreciate the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker and the Legislature for their continued investment in public higher education. Our commitment to Victoria is simple. We will listen first, we will invest wisely, and we will deliver high-value degrees that open doors for families and employers across the region.”

Texas A&M–Victoria’s interim president, Dr. James K. Nelson, said the campus is ready for a seamless start.

“Our students will continue their studies without interruption, our faculty and staff will keep doing what they do best, and we will gain new pathways to collaborate across the A&M System,” Nelson said. “Joining the Aggie network gives our graduates even more lift as they pursue careers and service to the state.”

The transition will include updated university branding and alignment with A&M System policies and student supports. Current students will remain on track toward their degrees, and university operations will continue as scheduled.
