PSJA ISD’s Vida Clover Elementary Launches Student-Led Mini City, Bear Valley, to Build Real-World Skills

SAN JUAN – Imagine a bustling city where young leaders run businesses, manage finances, and serve as elected officials—all within their school. That’s exactly what students at Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD’s Vida Clover Elementary are experiencing with the launch of Bear Valley, a first-of-its-kind student-led simulated city that integrates social-emotional learning (SEL) and project-based learning to provide hands-on, real-world education. The grand opening took place on Friday, January 31, 2025.

Complete with city officials, businesses, a bank, and essential services, Bear Valley gives students an interactive way to develop leadership, financial literacy, and civic responsibility. Young entrepreneurs earn “Bear Bucks” through jobs and good deeds, deposit them into their bank accounts, and shop at one of 14 student-run businesses—including Bear-y Beautiful Nails, H-E-B, Farmer’s Market, Sweet and Treats Bakery, and even a movie theater.

During the grand opening, Hidalgo County District Attorney Judge Terry Palacios administered the oath of office to Bear Valley’s newly elected city officials, including its first-ever student mayor. PSJA ISD Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias delivered opening remarks, praising the initiative for its impact on student learning beyond the traditional classroom.

“At PSJA ISD, we strive to create opportunities that equip our students with essential life skills,” said Dr. Elias. “Bear Valley is a perfect example of how we can make learning engaging and meaningful, giving students hands-on experience in financial literacy, teamwork, and leadership.”

Vida Clover Elementary Principal Dr. Kristine Garza emphasized the program’s focus on student empowerment and career readiness.

“Bear Valley allows our students to take ownership of their learning while developing real-world skills,” said Dr. Garza. “We’ve even trained our student store managers with PSJA’s customer care standards and partnered with local business leaders to mentor our young entrepreneurs.”

Beyond business skills, Bear Valley fosters empathy, communication, and problem-solving, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and community building. Rooted in PSJA ISD’s longstanding Bear Pride legacy, this initiative will continue to evolve, ensuring students are prepared to lead and thrive in an ever-changing world.
