PSJA ISD Honors Memorial High School US History Teacher with First-Ever Heart of Service Coin for Heroic Actions

PHARR, Texas – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD made district history today as Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias presented the first-ever PSJA Heart of Service Coin to Jonathan Rodriguez, U.S. History Teacher at PSJA Memorial Early College High School, for his heroic and compassionate actions in protecting a student.
Recently, Mr. Rodriguez, who lives near the campus, witnessed a student being struck by a moving vehicle while riding a scooter across a neighborhood intersection on his way home from work. Without hesitation, he rushed to the scene, directing traffic and ensuring the student was safe until help arrived.
In recognition of his bravery, leadership, and care, Mr. Rodriguez became the inaugural recipient of the district’s Heart of Service Coin — an honor reserved only for extraordinary acts that reflect the words engraved on the medal: Protecting, Serving, and Rising Above.
“Mr. Rodriguez set the standard for what this award represents,” said Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. “His actions demonstrate the heart of our PSJA Family…protecting our students, serving with compassion, and rising above in moments of crisis. We are proud to honor his courage and service through this historic recognition.”
The PSJA Heart of Service Coin will be awarded only on rare occasions to recognize individuals whose selfless actions go far beyond the call of duty and leave a lasting impact on the PSJA Family.
Today’s presentation was met with heartfelt applause from students, staff, and district leaders, who celebrated Mr. Rodriguez’s heroism as an inspiration to the entire community.
“As a former volunteer first responder, I know that when you hear an alarm or see someone in trouble, you don’t think, you just act,” said Mr. Rodriguez. “It’s in you to want to help and run toward action. In that moment everyone did their part by calling 911 and stepping up so that even in a bad situation, the right people were there at the right time.”
In addition to the district recognition, Mr. Rodriguez was presented with a Challenge Coin from the Alamo Fire Chief Ramon Flores for his efforts.
