New grant will provide vital resources for homeless children

New grant will provide vital resources for homeless children
In its continuing mission to break down obstacles toward learning, McAllen ISD has received a grant to help students from families who are experiencing homelessness.
The Texas Education for Homeless Children and Youth (TECHY) Continuation Grant will be used to provide additional support for McAllen ISD’s homeless population. The grant is for $53,574.
The TECHY grant promotes equitable access for children and youth experiencing homelessness by removing barriers to enrollment and identification. It will also increase levels of support services and improve academic outcomes.
Through this grant, the school district can provide support such as school supplies, clothing, hygiene items, food, snacks and transportation assistance, as well as connect families to community resources. The grant helps ensure these students have equal access to education and stability while addressing issues that could affect their attendance, academic success and/or emotional well being.
The process begins with campus staff identifying potential students. McAllen ISD’s team of social workers coordinate the needed services.
In addition to meeting basic needs, students also have the opportunity to participate in enrichment programs which empower students to thrive in learning, work and life.
“These sessions provide hands-on enrichment activities focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), reading and writing state requirements plus social-emotional learning,” Connie Caballero, McAllen ISD Social Services Case Manager, said. “This approach helps students build confidence, explore their interests, and develop skills that support their academic and personal growth.”
So far, about 274 students have met the criteria in McAllen ISD.
The grant will allow school officials to focus on areas of reading and writing for 3rd-8th grade students to strengthen literacy skills while providing social-emotional support. The grant will foster academic growth, engagement, and confidence by helping students achieve grade level proficiency during this school year.
