New Assistant Director for Athletics Video Production

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Thursday the promotion of Mikey Rodriguez to assistant director for athletics video production.

Rodriguez is entering his fourth year with UTRGV overseeing all broadcast and video production for UTRGV Athletics. Rodriguez has been tasked with creating compelling in-venue videos and overseeing broadcasts for all home baseball, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball and soccer contests.

“This is a well-deserved promotion as Mikey has raised our ESPN+ broadcasts to among the best at the mid-major level while producing engaging videos and overseeing our new video and ribbon boards,” senior associate athletic director for communications & championships Jonah Goldberg said. “What makes Mikey special, though, is the amount of time he spends with, and the opportunities he affords student workers to help them gain knowledge and experience to help prepare them for jobs in broadcasting and video production. He lives the UTRGV mission by providing innovative and unique multicultural education dedicated to student access and success in a real-world setting. On behalf of my entire time, I want to congratulate Mikey on this promotion.”

This past year, Rodriguez continued his mission of providing opportunities for UTRGV students as he oversaw eight student workers that helped him with content creation. These students also gained experience working in a variety of roles for broadcasts on ESPN+.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to continue the growth and the improvement my team and I have brought to UTRGV,” Rodriguez said. “I’m thankful for the trust put in me in this new role and I look forward to the challenges that it will bring.”

Rodriguez has been part of the UTRGV Athletics game day experience since 2015, serving on the broadcast crew in a variety of roles, including technical director, replay operator, graphics operator, and camera operator. He has participated in similar roles with local professional teams including the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA G-League and the RGV FC Toros, then of the USL.

Rodriguez also has experience working with the venue now known as Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium, the McAllen Convention Center, Bert Ogden Arena, and Payne Arena, where he primarily worked with the video and ribbon boards, switchers, and mixers while providing excellent customer service.
