Mission Residents get costs covered by Mission EDC to pursue teacher certification through Region One

Edinburg, Texas – Mission residents Evelyn Sackey and Ciro Ramos are one step closer to becoming certified teachers after the Mission Economic Development Corporation (EDC) presented a $10,000 check on Sept. 17, 2025, to cover their program fees through Region One Education Service Center’s Teacher Alternative Certification Program.

Ramos, who currently works at Mission CISD as a Substitute Teacher, is pursuing certification in History with the goal of teaching middle or high school.

“I’ve enjoyed working with students as a substitute, but my goal has always been to have my own classroom,” Ramos said. “I am happy to have this support.”

Sackey is pursuing her Special Education Certification with the goal of becoming an Elementary School Teacher.

“I can’t tell you how happy I am that I am getting my education paid for,” Sackey said. “I have been wanting this for a long time. Before this opportunity, I was wondering how I would get the money to pay for this. I cannot wait to teach and serve students.”

The Mission EDC joins a growing group of local agencies and school systems partnering with Region One’s Teacher Alternative Certification Program to strengthen the teacher pipeline and address the statewide demand for certified educators.

“Supporting future teachers means supporting Mission’s future,” said Teclo Garcia, Mission EDC Chief Executive Officer. “This partnership with Region One helps aspiring educators step into the classroom and strengthens the talent pipeline our community depends on.”

This initiative is powered by the Rio South Texas Education & Community Development Foundation, which collaborates with Region One ESC to reduce financial barriers for aspiring teachers. By covering program costs, local organizations are helping prepare the next generation of educators while addressing critical workforce needs.
