Mission Junior High Student hits a high note with top regional mariachi honor

MISSION, TEXAS Regina Arce, an 8th-grade student at Mission Junior High, is making waves in the local music scene after earning the prestigious title of 1st place Alto Voice for the Region 15 Middle School Mariachi Group A.

Arce has been part of the Mission CISD mariachi program for three years, but her love for singing began much earlier.

“When I was little, I loved to sing,” she shared. “So, when I was going into 6th grade, I knew I wanted to be in music, and I chose mariachi.”

Earning the Top Spot

Her decision to join mariachi has paid off in a big way. Competing against top student performers from across the region, Arce secured the number one spot in her vocal category. “It felt amazing,” Arce said. “I felt honored to be number one and I couldn’t believe it.”

The audition process for Region 15’s All-Region Mariachi was a new and exciting opportunity.

“My teachers just told me about it and asked if I wanted to join, and I said, ‘Let’s do it!’” said Arce.

Spotlight Moment on the Regional Stage

Arce’s performance earned her a place at the All-Region Mariachi Concert, an experience she’ll never forget.

“When I found out I’d be performing, I was like, ‘Oh my god, I did it! I got number one.” For Arce, the most memorable part of the concert was simple but powerful: “When I started to sing.”

Like many young performers, Regina has faced her share of challenges. Her key to success? “Practice and practice until you get it right.”

Arce says her experience in mariachi has helped her grow not only as a performer but as a person.

“It changed me to become better and more talented—and to make my family proud.”

Supported by Mentors and Dreams for the Future

Arce credits her mariachi director, Mr. Francisco Vela, for playing a key role in her musical journey.

“Yes, my mariachi directors have supported me a lot,” Arce shared.

Looking ahead, Arce already has her eyes on future goals. “My goal is to become the varsity singer, to be the best of the best, and to practice more and more.”

Mission CISD proudly celebrates Arce’s remarkable achievement and the role educators like Mr. Vela plays in helping students succeed. Regina is a shining example of how dedication, talent, and support can help students rise to the top.
