Mission CISD and Mission Historical Museum Commemorate 100 Years of History with Time Capsule Event

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, the Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD), in partnership with the Mission Historical Museum, marked the centennial of the 1925 North Mission Grammar School Time Capsule by burying a new capsule, to remain sealed until 2125.
This historic occasion brought together students, staff, and community members to celebrate a century of preserved history while creating new memories for future generations.
The century-old time capsule’s contents were unveiled and put on display exclusively for the event, offering attendees a rare glimpse into the past. Artifacts, letters, and memorabilia from 1925 provided invaluable insight into the early days of Mission’s educational and cultural history.
Mission CISD Board President – Iris Iglesias remarked on the initial days of Mission CISD.
“You know – The Mission school district was established in 1910, built on a foundation of hard work, resilience, and a vision for the future,” said Iglesias. Over the years, our community has grown, our schools have evolved, and our students have continued to make us proud. Education has always been at the heart of Mission CISD, and today we continue that legacy by preserving a piece of this era in the 2025-time capsule.”
Continuing this treasured tradition, a new time capsule was sealed and buried during the event, set to be opened in the year 2125. This modern capsule includes essays, poems, and artwork created by Mission CISD students, ensuring that their voices and experiences are preserved for the community’s future generations.
One of the students who included her letter on what Mission CISD is like today was Maci Mendoza from Salinas Elementary.
“My message to the students that open up the capsule in 2125 is to keep the world safe,” she said.
Mission CISD is honored to have partnered with the Mission Historical Museum to celebrate this momentous occasion. Through events like these, the district remains committed to fostering a deep appreciation for history, education, and community pride.
Dr. Cris Valdez – Superintendent of Schools for Mission CISD reflected on the importance of the day.
“In 2125, when the time capsule is opened, the world will undoubtedly be vastly different,” Valdez said. “But today, we stand in reflection, honoring the legacy of those who came before us, cherishing the present moment, and contemplating the future that awaits us a century from now.”
Mission Consolidated Independent School District thanks the Mission Historical Museum and the City of Mission for making us part of the historic day.
