Mike Johnson proposes pro-Trump singer for Super Bowl instead of Bad Bunny

Washington (EFE) — The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson, criticized on Wednesday the selection of Bad Bunny for the Super Bowl halftime show and instead suggested country singer Lee Greenwood, whose music is often played at Donald Trump’s rallies.

“I didn’t even know who Bad Bunny was, but I think it’s a terrible decision,” Johnson said when asked by a reporter in the halls of Congress.

The lawmaker argued that the artist “does not appeal to a broad audience” like that of the Super Bowl, an event that, he noted, “has many eyes on it,” including those of young viewers.

Johnson suggested that a more appropriate choice would have been Greenwood, the singer of the patriotic anthem “God Bless the USA,” which has become an unofficial hymn for Republicans and the Trump movement.

His opinion aligns with that of Trump himself, who said he had never heard of Bad Bunny and called his selection “absolutely ridiculous.”

The choice of the Puerto Rican performer as the Super Bowl headliner—set to take place on February 7 in Santa Clara, California—has sparked criticism among Republican leaders, who object to his music being in Spanish.

Bad Bunny, known for his outspoken criticism of Trump’s immigration policies, will make history as the first Latino artist to perform solo in the Super Bowl halftime show.

Shortly after the NFL’s announcement, one of the Department of Homeland Security’s advisers, Corey Lewandowski, said the government would deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during the event.

However, the White House later clarified that there are no plans to conduct immigration raids in connection with the Super Bowl.

Last Saturday, the musician responded to the criticism of his participation during his monologue as guest host on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” where he addressed the audience with several lines in Spanish.

“If you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn,” he concluded.
