Men’s Tennis Drops Match at UTSA

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s tennis team was defeated, 4-0, Saturday by the UTSA Roadrunners at the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio.

UTSA (1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after capturing wins on the second and third doubles courts. UTRGV’s No. 3 duo of sophomores Paolo Bonaguro and Will Roberts, playing their first match together this spring, battled well and pushed their bout to the end but fell 7-5. The No. 1 duo of sophomore Santiago Serrano and freshman Loic Young Kriegel held a 6-5 lead in their match, but it went unfinished when the Roadrunners secured the doubles point.

UTSA captured the match victory with wins on the second, sixth and third singles courts. With the match following a clinch-clinch format, the remaining singles matches went unfinished.

Redshirt junior Sam Whitehead was leading the No. 1 match when it was called. He took the first set, 6-4, over Tiago Torres and was battling in the second with the set knotted at 5-5. Serrano dropped the first set of his No. 4 match but responded well in the second. He was locked at 5-5 in the frame when the match was stopped.

The Vaqueros (0-3) will be back in action Thursday at 12 p.m. at Abilene Christian.
