McAllen Memorial Student Council earns national award

For its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community, the McAllen Memorial Student Council has been recognized as a 2025 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC).

Throughout the year, the Council organized numerous impactful school-wide and community events. Some of these events include exciting spirit weeks, staff appreciation, mental health awareness campaigns, and more.

They played a significant role in TASC (Texas Association of Student Councils) District 16, proudly serving as the region’s secretary school and representing the Rio Grande Valley during the TASC state conference held in March in Arlington.

“The student council at McAllen Memorial just pulled off something extraordinary,” NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe said. “Their student-driven change has earned them national recognition as a National Gold Council of Excellence, proving that when young people are given the chance to lead, they turn their vision into real-world impact.”

The NASC program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

“We are thrilled to receive this national honor,” Memorial Student Council Advisor Marina Contreras said. “Our students consistently go above and beyond to create meaningful experiences and foster a positive culture on campus. This award is a reflection of their passion, leadership, and commitment to our school and community.”

“This year, our council did more than just host fun events for our classmates,” Memorial Student Council President Martin Perez said. “We built a stronger, more connected student community, and I couldn’t be prouder of the entire councils’ hard work and dedication this year.”

A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Gold Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.
