McAllen Education Foundation raises $231,000 from Bowling Tournament

The McAllen Education Foundation’s third annual Bowling Tournament was a huge success!

Thanks to multiple sponsors, the event raised approximately $231,000 that will benefit McAllen ISD students and teachers.

“A lot of people in the community came through for the Foundation … came through for the district in order to support our teachers,” MEF Board Member Jamie Brown-Rosas said. “Ultimately, the most exciting thing here is that we are raising money for our innovative teaching grants. These are grants that we award to teachers who really like to think out of the box. It’s just exciting that we have teachers that … try to make learning a lot more fun for them (students).”

Held Feb. 22 at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen, it was great fun for teachers and other staff members who participated on the teams. Every McAllen ISD campus formed a team along with several departments. The top three elementary school teams and top three secondary school teams earned cash prizes.

The Elementary School Division winners included Escandon Elementary (1st place, awarded $3,000), Milam Elementary (2nd place, $2,000) and McAuliffe Elementary (3rd place, $1,000). The Secondary School Division winners were McAllen High (1st place, $3,000), Travis Middle School (2nd place, $2,000) and Brown Middle School (3rd place, $1,000).

Special thanks go to top sponsors H-E-B, Hidalgo County Commissioner Eddie Cantu and Vantage Bank.

Last fall, the Foundation funded a record 70 innovative teaching grants for $150,000.
