James Cameron to Adapt Dark Fantasy Novel ‘The Devils’ for the Big Screen

Los Angeles (USA), (EFE) – James Cameron announced on Monday that he will adapt the dark fantasy novel The Devils, the latest work by British author Joe Abercrombie, for the big screen.
The director’s production company, Lightstorm, acquired “Joe Abercrombie’s latest book,” and Cameron will co-write the screenplay with the author to bring the story to theaters, according to a statement from the filmmaker.
Following its release on May 6, the novel instantly topped The Sunday Times bestseller list in the UK. “It also just debuted at number 5 on The New York Times bestseller list,” the statement added.
Abercrombie’s story presents a battle epic between good and evil, set in a medieval world where monsters may be humanity’s best hope for survival.
“Twists come at a breakneck pace, delivered with Joe’s trademark biting wit and style. The Devils showcases his cynical view of human nature, in all its dark and selfish glory, told through decidedly inhuman characters,” the release noted.
There is no official start date for the project, which joins Ghosts of Hiroshima, the upcoming novel by Charles Pellegrino. Cameron acquired the rights to that story last September for a film adaptation.
If both projects go forward, they would be the first major films Cameron develops outside of Avatar since Titanic, the 1997 Oscar-winning film starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio that earned him Best Picture.
“Cameron has spent over four decades captivating audiences—myself included—by bringing the impossible to life on screen. No one balances jaw-dropping action and spectacle with heart-wrenching personal stakes quite like he does. I can’t think of anyone better to bring this strange and wonderful monster of a book to the big screen,” Abercrombie concluded.
