Impact of Technology on Child and Adolescent Development and Mental Health Workshop
In our ever-evolving digital age, the pervasive influence of technology and digital media (TDM) on the development and mental health of children and adolescents has become a critical area of concern. To delve into this complex issue, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) are set to host a two-day virtual workshop on April 4th and 5th, 2024 at 8 a.m.
The workshop aims to assemble a diverse array of experts spanning various disciplines including TDM, early development, childhood, and adolescence, as well as physical and mental health. Through a series of individual talks and panel discussions, participants will explore the current state of research on both the positive and negative effects of TDM on infants, children, and adolescents.
Key topics on the agenda include the impact of screen time on cognitive development, social interactions, and emotional well-being, as well as the potential role of technology in promoting positive outcomes such as educational attainment and social connectivity.
One of the unique aspects of this workshop is its inclusivity, as it welcomes not only the scientific community but also the general public. By opening the dialogue to a wider audience, the organizers hope to foster a more comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand and generate innovative solutions for mitigating any potential harms associated with excessive or inappropriate TDM use.
As society continues to grapple with the ever-expanding reach of technology into our daily lives, forums like the NICHD-NIMH workshop serve as crucial platforms for collaboration and knowledge-sharing. By harnessing the collective expertise of researchers, practitioners, and concerned stakeholders, we can better navigate the complex intersection of technology and human development, ultimately fostering healthier outcomes for the next generation.
