“How to Train Your Dragon” ends “Lilo & Stitch’s” reign on its opening weekend

Los Angeles, (EFE) – The action-fantasy film How to Train Your Dragon led the U.S. box office during its opening weekend with earnings of $83 million, dethroning Lilo & Stitch, which had held the top spot since late May.
The new live-action version from Universal, based on the 2010 animated film of the same name, also premiered in Latin America on the 15th, bringing its global box office total to $197.8 million.
How to Train Your Dragon pushed Lilo & Stitch into second place, and by a significant margin. The Disney film, which had stayed at number one for three weeks, managed to bring in only $15.5 million this weekend, according to the specialized website Box Office Mojo.
However, Disney’s production still boasts strong figures, with $366 million in domestic earnings and $858 million worldwide.
Another major release this weekend, the romantic comedy Materialists, debuted in third place with $12 million in U.S. box office revenue.
Directed by Céline Song, the film is expected to do well thanks to its well-known cast: Dakota Johnson stars as a matchmaker caught in a love triangle with a wealthy suitor (Pedro Pascal) and her ex (Chris Evans).
In fourth place is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which brought in $10.3 million this weekend, bringing its global total to $506 million to date.
Rounding out the top five is the John Wick spin-off Ballerina, starring Spanish-Cuban actress Ana de Armas as a deadly ballerina. In its second weekend in theaters, it earned $9.4 million, with a global total so far of $91.5 million.
