Harlingen Economic Development Corporation Partners with Region One ESC to Support Aspiring Teachers

Harlingen, Texas – Region One Education Service Center and the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation (EDC) are partnering to support aspiring teachers in the community. Through a $21,000 contribution, the Harlingen EDC is investing in the preparation of five Harlingen residents who will pursue certification through Region One ESC’s Teacher Alternative Certification Program.
A partnership designation ceremony was held Sept. 3, 2025 in Harlingen to highlight the collaboration.
Participants will receive coaching, mentorship and state exam preparation at no cost. The contribution from Harlingen EDC allows candidates to pursue certification in any teaching field, with priority placed on Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District (HCISD).
“We are deeply grateful for this partnership,” HCISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Kortan said. “This investment not only supports our aspiring teachers, but also strengthens the future of our classrooms. When teachers are prepared and supported from the start, our students benefit in powerful ways. This opportunity ensures that our residents enter the classroom with confidence, fresh ideas, and the tools they need to make an immediate impact on our children.”
The Harlingen EDC joins a growing group of local agencies and school systems partnering with Region One ESC’s Educator Preparation & Development Program to strengthen the teacher pipeline and address the need for certified educators.
“The most impactful way to support communities is bringing in education and the workforce,” said Marissa Falcon, Director of Educator Preparation & Development at Region One ESC. “These candidates will enter classrooms ready to serve students and provide a quality education. Quality Educator, quality community !”
This initiative is powered by the Rio South Texas Education & Community Development Foundation, which collaborates with Region One ESC to reduce financial barriers for aspiring teachers. By covering program costs, local organizations like the Harlingen EDC are helping prepare the next generation of educators while addressing critical workforce needs.
“Strong schools build strong communities — and strong economies” said Orlando Campos, CEO of the Harlingen EDC. “By supporting Region One ESC’s program, we’re helping to enhance the talent pipeline and expand opportunity, demonstrating our commitment to workforce development and long-term economic vitality.”
