Free GED and ESL Classes Begin at McAllen Public Library in Partnership with South Texas College

McAllen Public Library is partnering with South Texas College to offer free GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes beginning Monday, October 13, 2025. Classes will take place at MPL locations and are open to qualifying students seeking to improve their English or earn a high school equivalency diploma.

ESL classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Main Library (4001 N. 23rd St., McAllen) and at Palm View Branch Library (3401 Jordan Rd. W., McAllen). This program, offered at no cost to students, includes 80 hours of instruction, a free textbook, and free online learning resources. Classes provide comprehensive instruction in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and are open to all levels from beginner to advanced. To ensure your spot, students must register online at bit.ly/mplesl25, as space is limited.

GED classes will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lark Branch Library (2601 Lark Ave., McAllen). This program provides step-by-step preparation for the High School Equivalency exam, helping students gain the skills and confidence needed to continue their education or enter the workforce. All materials and instruction are provided at no cost, and registration is required at bit.ly/mplged25.

“Hosting these classes is one more way we can connect our community to free educational opportunities,” said Kate Horan, Library Director. “We encourage anyone interested in learning English or completing their high school education to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Mayor Javier Villalobos noted, “Education opens doors for our residents, and programs like these help families grow stronger while creating more opportunities for McAllen’s workforce and future.”

City Manager Isaac J. Tawil added, “The collaboration between McAllen Public Library and South Texas College demonstrates our City’s commitment to making lifelong learning accessible. These classes are an investment in our community’s success, providing tools open to everyone, in line with our mission to help those who are willing to help themselves further their opportunities.”
