Former Congresswoman Mayra Flores Announces 2026 Congressional Bid for Texas’ 28th District

Former U.S. Representative Mayra Flores, the first Mexican-born woman to serve in Congress, today announced her candidacy for Texas’ 28th Congressional District in the 2026 election. Flores is running to replace federally indicted incumbent Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar, bringing with her fresh leadership and a commitment to serving the people of South Texas.
Flores, a Republican, previously made history in 2022 when she flipped Texas’ 34th Congressional District in a special election, serving her constituents well from June 2022 to January 2023. During her time in the House of Representatives, she championed conservative values such as border security, economic opportunity, and family-focused policies. Now, she is running for the 28th District — a prime opportunity for a GOP pickup that will help ensure President Trump can continue advancing his America First agenda with a strong House majority.
“South Texas raised me, and its values—faith, family, and hard work—drive me to fight for Texas’ 28th District,” Flores declared. “As a proud Hispanic American, I’m running to grow the Republican majority by championing the voices and values of our community. The Hispanic vote was pivotal to President Trump’s 2024 victory, and I’ll help ensure it strengthens our party’s future. TX-28 deserves a leader who puts America First, not corruption or career politics. I’m all in to keep our border secure, boost our economy, and defend our values in every corner of this nation—especially where the GOP’s message needs to be heard most.”
Born in Burgos, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and raised in South Texas, Flores brings a much-needed perspective to the race. A former respiratory therapist, she resonates with working-class families and has built a reputation as a fierce advocate for Hispanic communities. Her 2022 victory in a historically Democratic district showcased her ability to connect with voters across party lines.
As a U.S. congresswoman, Flores will focus on border security, economic growth, and restoring trust in government. “South Texas is my home, and I know its challenges and potential,” she said. “Together, we can build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future.”
