Football Unveils Inaugural Schedule

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Tuesday that the Vaqueros football team will play seven home games as part of a 12-game schedule during their inaugural season in 2025.
Only 10 of out 130 NCAA Division I FCS programs (7.69%) played seven regular season home games in 2024.
Most seasons will see the Vaqueros compete in 11 regular season games, as per NCAA rules. However, the NCAA allows FCS programs to play a 12th game when there are 13 weekends between Labor Day weekend and the weekend prior to Thanksgiving, which will occur in 2025.
“College football in the Valley has been a long time coming, and we’re excited to be able to have so many home games to #RallyTheValley during this historic season,” UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. “The Valley deserves this, and we are looking forward to celebrating amid sellout crowds throughout 2025.”
The Vaqueros play their first-ever game on Aug. 30. against Sul Ross State at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium.
After a week 2 trip to Prairie View A&M, the Vaqueros return home for back-to-back games, hosting North American on Sept. 13 and Texas Wesleyan on Sept. 20.
The Vaqueros open Southland Conference play on Sept. 27 at Southeastern before playing their first Southland home game against Houston Christian on Oct. 4.
After a week 7 bye, the Vaqueros visit Lamar on Oct. 18 and then host Incarnate Word, the No. 6 overall seed in the 2024 NCAA Division I Football Championship, on Oct. 25.
The Vaqueros visit Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 1, host Nicholls on Nov. 8, visit McNeese on Nov. 15, and close out the regular season at home against East Texas A&M on Nov. 22.
The Southland Conference Champion earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Football Championship, a 5-round, 24-team tournament in which the top eight seeds earn first round byes. The first four rounds are played on the campus of the higher seed. The championship game was hosted by the Southland Conference at Toyota Stadium in Frisco from 2010-25 and will take place in Nashville, Tenn. in 2025 and 2026.
Game times and which game will be played at Sams Stadium in Brownsville will be announced at a later date.
Season Tickets Wait List
UTRGV Athletics initially made 6,000 season ticket deposits available for the 2025 football season and the allotment is sold out.
UTRGV is hard at work to ensure the Rio Grande Valley community has the best game day experience possible. As a part of that process, it was determined that limiting season ticket deposits to 6,000 is necessary to accommodate enough seats for season ticket holders, UTRGV students, the marching band, the player pass list, and the visiting team pass list.
Fans who have not yet placed a deposit but are interested in season tickets can sign up for the wait list at GoUTRGV.com/FootballWaitList. Should additional season tickets become available following the select-a-seat process, UTRGV Athletics will contact fans on the wait list based on Vaqueros Loyalty Points ranking.
Single-Game Tickets
Should any single-game tickets be available, they will be released during the week leading up to each game. Available inventory is not guaranteed and may vary by game.
