Dozens of PSJA ISD Parents Earn GED, Proving It’s Never Too Late

SAN JUAN, TX – Thirty-six parents enrolled in free GED classes through the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) were celebrated during a heartfelt graduation ceremony hosted on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at Stephen F. Austin Middle School.
The event, filled with pride and emotion, honored parents who—through determination, perseverance, and the support of the PSJA Family & Community Engagement Department—achieved a milestone many once thought was out of reach.
“We are incredibly proud of our parent graduates for showing that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams,” said PSJA Parental Engagement Director Ruben Garcia. “This moment reflects our district-wide commitment to ensuring that all families—not just students—have access to life-changing educational opportunities.”
This initiative is part of PSJA ISD’s Cradle to College vision and its ongoing mission of providing Opportunities for All. Through strong partnerships with South Texas College (STC) and Region One Education Service Center, PSJA ISD offers parents access to free GED courses and a wide range of programs that promote academic and workforce advancement.
In addition to GED classes, PSJA ISD parents can enroll in Citizenship, ESL, Computer Technology, and Security Guard Certification courses at the PSJA Ballew Learning Center. Thanks to an expanded partnership with South Texas College, parents also have access to career-focused training in high-demand fields, including Phlebotomy, Electrical Technician, Forklift Operation, and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) certification.
These offerings are a testament to PSJA ISD’s belief that education is a family journey—and that empowering parents strengthens students, schools, and the entire community.
Since the program’s inception, the PSJA Family & Community Engagement Department has supported thousands of parents in achieving their educational goals, helping them open new doors for themselves and future generations.
