City of McAllen, McAllen EDC join Region One ESC Initiative to Strengthen Education Workforce

McAllen, Texas – The City of McAllen, in partnership with the McAllen Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), has joined Region One Education Service Center’s efforts to expand access to teacher certification by contributing $12,600 to support aspiring educators. A check presentation was held on July 21, 2025, at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce to recognize the contribution and celebrate the launch of the partnership.

Through this investment, qualifying McAllen residents will be able to complete Region One ESC’s Teacher Alternative Certification Program at no cost. This opportunity is specifically intended for residents of McAllen, or individuals who work in McAllen, who are interested in teaching in McAllen classrooms.

“Investing in educators is an investment in the long-term vitality of McAllen,” said Isaac Tawil, City Manager of McAllen. “By helping more local residents become certified teachers, we’re addressing nationwide teacher shortages and building a workforce that starts with quality education.”

McAllen joins a growing group of local agencies and school systems partnering with Region One ESC’s Educator Preparation & Development program to support individuals on the path to earning their teacher certification.

“This program aligns perfectly with our mission to grow McAllen’s talent from within,” said Elizabeth Suarez, President & CEO of McAllen EDC. “Thanks to the City of McAllen’s support, we are helping residents move into meaningful, long-term careers while also improving student outcomes. With Texas reporting a 13.4% teacher attrition rate and over 42,000 teacher exits in 2022, this initiative is not only timely but essential for ensuring our classrooms are staffed with qualified, community-connected educators.”

Participants will receive coaching, mentorship and state exam preparation.

“We’re so grateful to the City of McAllen and the McAllen EDC for investing in the future of education through this partnership,” said Marissa Falcon, Administrator for Region One ESC’s Educator Preparation & Development Program. “This contribution directly supports McAllen residents who are ready to step into the classroom and make a difference. When we prepare quality teachers, we’re building stronger schools and a stronger community.”

This initiative is powered by the Rio South Texas Education & Community Development Foundation, which is working with Region One ESC to address the need for certified educators in Texas classrooms by upskilling and removing financial hardships for individuals pursuing their teaching certification. Participating organizations are supporting candidates with program fees and other associated costs.
