Celebrating Cultural Heritage: International Museum Day in Brownsville

Celebrating Cultural Heritage: International Museum Day in Brownsville

Since its inception by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, International Museum Day has served as a global platform to celebrate the invaluable contributions of museums to society. Over the years, this observance has gained momentum, shining a spotlight on the rich tapestry of cultural heritage preserved within museum walls.

This May 18th, the museums of Brownsville – including the Heritage Museum/Stillman House Museum, Costumes of the Americas Museum, and the Historic Brownsville Museum – invite you to join in the celebration of International Museum Day. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors are welcome to explore these cultural treasures free of charge, making it the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in history, art, and heritage.

Step back in time as you wander through the halls of the Heritage Museum/Stillman House Museum, where the stories of Brownsville’s past come to life. Marvel at the dazzling array of costumes from across the Americas at the Costumes of the Americas Museum, and gain insight into the vibrant cultures that have shaped the region. Then, delve into the rich tapestry of Brownsville’s history at the Historic Brownsville Museum, where exhibits chronicle the city’s journey through time.

But International Museum Day isn’t just about admiring artifacts – it’s about fostering a deeper understanding of our shared heritage and the pivotal role that museums play in preserving and promoting it. Bring your friends and family along for a day of discovery, learning, and appreciation for the cultural treasures housed within these institutions.

As we come together to celebrate International Museum Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to preserving and sharing our cultural heritage for generations to come. Join us in honoring the past, embracing the present, and shaping the future through the power of museums. See you there!
