“At What Cost?”: The Economic Fallout of Mass Deportation

Access online version of this press release HERE
Washington, DC – The U.S. economy depends on millions of immigrants who work hard, pay taxes, and contribute to key industries across the country. Yet instead of recognizing their critical role, the Trump administration is pursuing policies that weaken our workforce, drain tax revenue, and destabilize entire communities. By weaponizing the IRS to target tax paying immigrants, the government is not only invading the privacy of millions of people, but also discouraging participation in the tax system, ultimately stripping billions of dollars from programs like Social Security and Medicare that immigrant workers help sustain. At the same time, as immigrant workers are increasingly targeted, states like Florida are seeking to weaken child labor protections, opening the door for minors to replace immigrant workers in essential industries.
As the At What Cost? campaign highlights, the economic consequences of these actions will be felt by all Americans, raising costs, disrupting industries, and pulling billions of dollars out of the economy.
According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
“Instead of working to address inflation, the Trump Administration is actually poised to make things worse by targeting tax-paying immigrants who are making significant contributions to our safety net and want to do right by our laws. Through their indiscriminate mass deportation efforts, they are creating labor shortages, driving up prices, and discouraging taxpayers. And in a disturbing contradiction, they are removing workers who sustain critical industries while states like Florida try to roll back child labor protections effectively seeking to replace working immigrants with minors. This move is economically and morally reckless. If we truly care about our nation’s financial future, we should be working towards providing work permits for the undocumented who are already contributing, not forcing them out.”
