South Texas College Art Gallery is excited to present “Arundo Domestic,” a new exhibition by fiber and mixed-media artist Timothy Gonchoroff. This collection offers a profound exploration of art and ecology, focusing on the role of the invasive plant species Arundo donax—commonly known as Giant Cane—in the Rio Grande Valley. Gonchoroff’s work seeks to shift the perspective on this often-maligned plant, examining its impact and potential through his unique approach to weaving.

About the Artist
Hailing from Virginia, Timothy Gonchoroff brings a distinct perspective to fiber art, integrating natural dyeing, weaving, carpentry, and other craft processes. A self-taught weaver, Gonchoroff’s art incorporates materials from unconventional sources such as plastic bags, vinyl banners, and videocassettes, transforming them into evocative, large-scale weavings rich with narrative and symbolism. His work is a visual documentation of how environments evolve under human influence.

Artist Statement
“Arundo Domestic” explores the visual dominance of Arundo donax in the Rio Grande Valley. Traditionally seen as an “invasive” species, the plant’s widespread presence is often met with a negative outlook. However, through his artwork, Gonchoroff redefines this perception, blending functionality with conceptual insights that question its ecological role.
