A Historic First: Mission CISD Conjunto Band Selected to Perform at Prestigious State Music Convention
MISSION, TEXAS– The spotlight is shining bright on Mission CISD talent, and the music is about to play loud and proud. Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) is proud to announce that Rafael Cantu Junior High’s Conjunto ensemble, Herencia De Oro, has been selected to perform at the highly esteemed Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention in San Antonio in February 2026.
Out of submissions from schools across Texas, Herencia De Oro was chosen as one of only a select few groups to be featured as a Top Music Showcase Performer. The honor follows a rigorous audition process that requires a recorded performance, reviewed by leading music educators from across the state.
Herencia De Oro Band member, Miranda Perales, said, “I’m really honored to be chosen to represent my Conjunto at the TMEA Convention. This could be one of the first times our district gets to be recognized on this stage, and I’m so proud to represent Rafael Cantu Jr. High. I can’t wait to give it my best and make our school shine!”
This invitation marks a historic first for Mission CISD. This is the first time a student performing group will represent the district on such a prominent statewide stage. The TMEA Convention attracts thousands of music professionals and educators annually, making this recognition a milestone not only for the school but for the entire district.
The ensemble’s success also reflects the dedication and leadership of Rafael Cantu Jr. High Band Teacher and Conjunto sponsor, Richard Cerrillo, whose commitment to nurturing student talent has guided Herencia De Oro to this remarkable milestone.
Their invitation to perform on such a prestigious stage is the result of months of preparation, countless hours of practice, and a shared passion for preserving Conjunto music.
“I’m so proud of these students and all the work they’ve put in to get here,” said Cerrillo. “Being invited to perform at the TMEA Convention is such an incredible honor, and it really shows their talent, dedication, and love for Conjunto music.”
As Herencia De Oro prepares to take the TMEA stage, the entire Mission CISD community celebrates this historic achievement and looks forward to the performance in February.
