Weslaco PD prepare for SB4
WESLACO, Texas— The fate of Senate Bill 4 hangs in uncertainty, but the Weslaco police department intends to abide by the state law should it come into force. This bill empowers both state and local law enforcement to detain individuals they suspect of entering the U.S. illegally. Chief Joe Rivera asserts that his department is obligated to uphold the law.
Chief Rivera acknowledges the possibility of certain sections of the bill being invalidated or the entire bill being struck down. He emphasizes the need for patience as the judiciary deliberates on the matter. Depending on the outcome, the department may need to conduct its own analysis to determine necessary adjustments.
While the department could contemplate making changes in response to the bill, implementing such adjustments may require time. Chief Rivera underscores the importance of thorough consideration before his department can fully comply with the new regulations established by SB4.
