PSJA ISD Launches Aspiring Assistant Principals Academy to Strengthen Leadership Pipeline
PHARR – A cohort of 30 PSJA ISD educators has officially embarked on a new professional journey as part of the district’s inaugural Aspiring Assistant Principals Academy, which kicked off its first session on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, at the PSJA Napper Development & Support Center.
The academy is part of PSJA ISD’s strategic efforts to develop a strong internal pipeline of campus leaders, following the success of the 2024–2025 PSJA Leadership Academy that focused on preparing future principals.
“The creation of this academy represents PSJA’s ongoing commitment to developing and empowering our own,” said Assistant Superintendent for Academics, Ranulfo Marquez. “We want to ensure that when leadership opportunities arise, we have talented, well-prepared candidates ready to take on the challenge and continue advancing our mission of excellence for all students.”
The Aspiring Assistant Principals Academy consists of four intensive sessions featuring hands-on workshops, leadership simulations, and real-world problem-solving experiences designed to equip participants with the essential skills required for effective campus leadership.
“This program is more than training, it is strategically designed as a transformational experience,” said Dr. Nora Rivas Garza, Executive Officer for Secondary Schools and chair of the academy’s planning committee. “We are investing in the next generation of PSJA leaders who will drive innovation, foster strong school cultures, and positively impact student outcomes.”
The academy was strategically developed by a district-level committee of leaders from various departments to ensure a comprehensive, high-quality professional development experience. Committee members included leaders from Human Resources, Executive Offices, Professional Development, Assessment, and Communications & Marketing.
The inaugural cohort was selected through a competitive application process and represents some of the district’s most accomplished educators. To qualify, participants had to hold a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, a Principal certificate, and have at least three years of professional experience. Cohort members come from a variety of roles, including teachers, curriculum coordinators, CLLs, and counselors, reflecting the diverse expertise PSJA ISD values in its future leaders.
“Thank you to everyone who committed to this professional growth journey, along with the committee who thoughtfully planned the academy,” said Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. “All of these efforts are focused on building better leaders and, ultimately, supporting student outcomes across our district. We are proud of the dedication and professionalism of these educators as they take this important step forward.”
Upon completion, participants will be added to PSJA ISD’s Assistant Principal Candidate Pool, positioning them as top contenders for future assistant principal roles within the district.
“Our goal is to build a sustainable leadership pipeline that reflects our district’s vision and values,” added Marquez. “By growing our own leaders, we strengthen the PSJA culture of excellence and ensure continuity for years to come.”
