McAllen ISD School Board lowers property tax rate

The McAllen ISD Board of Trustees has adopted a 2025 total tax rate that will save homeowners substantial money on their annual school tax bill.
By voting to reduce the tax rate by more than six cents, the average homeowner can enjoy a projected savings of about $227 on their annual school tax bill.
The new tax rate is now $0.9322 per $100 of assessed value. That is a reduction of more than six pennies ($0.0644) from last year’s rate of $0.9966.
The lower rate also reduces costs across the entire tax base for local businesses.
Although the State of Texas mandated a three-cent reduction, the School Board chose to go further—cutting an additional three cents to maximize savings for local taxpayers. Because the district has managed its debt responsibly and maintained healthy reserves, the Board had the flexibility to lower the rate further without impacting ongoing operations or long-term financial stability.
“This will benefit our community by lowering each McAllen homeowner’s school tax bill while also helping businesses by reducing costs,” McAllen ISD Superintendent Dr. René Gutiérrez said. “We know this tax rate savings will help the families of our students and staff plus everyone throughout the McAllen ISD community.”
This is the second straight year McAllen ISD has reduced the tax rate. In 2023-24, the tax rate was $1.0011. It went down a penny to $0.9966 in 2024-25 and has now been lowered to $0.9322, marking a reduction of nearly seven cents in two years.
Property values are determined by the Hidalgo County Appraisal District, a political subdivision of the State of Texas and established by state law. McAllen ISD only sets the tax rate. Individual tax bills may vary based on changes to a property’s appraised value and exemptions, but the overall rate is lower than last year.
