Angelina Jolie Raises Concerns Over Free Speech in America

San Sebastián, Spain — While appearing at the 2025 San Sebastián International Film Festival in support of her new film Couture, actress and activist Angelina Jolie made a candid statement about the current political climate in the United States. When asked what she fears as both an artist and an American, Jolie responded:

“I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country.”

Jolie, 50, went on to express deep concerns about growing restrictions on personal expression and freedoms. She highlighted her global perspective, saying that having lived an international life — with an international family, friends, and worldview — has made her especially sensitive to anything that divides or limits the rights of individuals to speak freely.

She was very visibly hesitant on the way that she chose to answer the question.

Her remarks follow the recent suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! by ABC, which was taken off air after controversial remarks made regarding the death of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk. Jolie did not directly name the suspension in her comments, but observers note the timing overlaps with broader concerns about political pressure on media and entertainment.
