Service Dog Bam Bam Reunited with Owner After Citywide Search

CHICAGO, IL – Bam Bam, the 14‑year‑old dachshund who serves as both a service and emotional support dog to Angel Santiago—a legally blind Chicago resident—has been safely returned to his loving home after being stolen from a Logan Square yard more than two months ago.

On the evening of August 19, Bam Bam was anonymously dropped off at the 16th District Police Station in Jefferson Park. Officers confirmed the dog’s identity through his microchip. He appeared in good health and was reunited with Santiago around 9:30 p.m. That evening, the pair shared a heartfelt reunion.

The story captured Chicago’s hearts and mobilized the city: dozens of volunteers campaigned with flyers, local animal welfare groups and PETA helped raise a reward up to $6,000, and nearly $20,000 was collected to fund search efforts and additional support.

While investigators continue to pursue leads, the identity of the individuals who returned Bam Bam—and whether they will accept the reward—remains unknown. There have been no arrests to date.

This reunion underscores the power of community solidarity, compassion, and persistence in bringing Bam Bam home.
