McAllen ISD earns highest grade in the state accountability system

McAllen ISD has earned an “A” Rating from the state of Texas. This was achieved through the state accountability system known as STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness).

“This was a total team effort,” McAllen ISD Superintendent Dr. René Gutiérrez said. “It speaks to the hard work of our teachers, students, staff, administrators and School Board. Parental involvement is also important to accomplish our student success. Each year, the state assessments are adjusted to make them more rigorous. I’m proud to say McAllen ISD overcame the challenge. We are excited to improve our letter grade to an “A” Rated School District!”

In addition, McAllen ISD had more than half (17) of its campuses earn an “A” Rating on the state accountability system including all of its high schools. These schools include McAllen High, Memorial High, Rowe High, Achieve Early College High, Lamar Academy, Brown Middle School, Cathey Middle School, Fossum Middle School, Morris Middle School, Castaneda Elementary, Gonzalez Elementary, Milam Elementary, Perez Elementary, Rayburn Elementary, Sanchez Elementary, Seguin Elementary, and Thigpen-Zavala Elementary.

McAllen ISD was one of just three public school districts in Hidalgo County to earn the “A” Rating this year.

The 85th Texas Legislature passed House Bill (HB) 22, establishing three domains for measuring the academic performance of districts and campuses. These are:

·         Student Achievement

·         School Progress (divided into Academic Growth and Relative Performance)

·         Closing the Gaps

Districts receive grades of A, B, C, D, or an F for overall performance, as well as for performance in each domain. The state legislature approved the new A-F rating system in 2015.
