Texas Senate Approves Controversial Congressional Redistricting Map Amid Democratic Walkout

Austin, Texas — On Tuesday, August 12, the Texas Senate passed a new congressional redistricting map by a 19–2 vote, marking a significant development in the ongoing political standoff over redistricting. The map, which aims to increase Republican representation in the U.S. House of Representatives, now advances to the Texas House, where Democrats have been absent for over a week to prevent a quorum and block the legislation.

The Senate vote proceeded without the participation of nine Democratic senators, who exited the chamber in protest of what they describe as a “corrupt process.” In a joint statement, the Senate Democratic Caucus condemned the mid-decade redistricting effort, asserting, “This mid-decade redistricting isn’t about fair representation—it’s about politicians picking their voters instead of voters choosing their leaders.”

Despite the walkout, the Senate maintained a quorum, allowing the vote to proceed. Senators Judith Zaffirini of Laredo and Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa of McAllen remained to vote against the map, both having previously participated in a similar protest against redistricting in 2003. They emphasized the importance of legal challenges, stating, “Our greatest hope is at the courthouse, and the sooner we get there, the better.”

The newly approved map now moves to the Texas House, where Democrats have been absent to prevent a quorum. Governor Greg Abbott has indicated he will call a second special session if the House remains unable to conduct business, potentially with additional legislative items on the agenda.

The redistricting effort has drawn national attention, with critics arguing that it could unfairly benefit Republicans ahead of the 2026 elections. The situation remains fluid, with both parties preparing for continued legal and legislative battles in the coming weeks.
