MALC Responds to Release of Proposed Redistricting Map: “This Was Never About Texas Families”

AUSTIN, TX — Today, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC) released the following statement in response to the release of proposed congressional map during the 89(1) Special Legislative Session:
“The map released today makes one thing clear: this special session was never about flood victims or Texas families. It was always about Donald Trump,” said MALC Chair Rep. Ramón Romero, Jr. “Rather than honoring communities still grieving and rebuilding after the July 4th floods—and focusing lawmakers’ attention on preventing the next tragedy—Governor Abbott is attempting to force through a congressional map behind closed doors to lock in Trump’s political power and weaken Latino representation.
“This proposed map is not about fair representation. It is about silencing the very communities driving Texas forward. Texans deserve a government that puts them first, not one that rewrites the rules to serve a political agenda.
“Latinos are nearly half of this state, but this map denies us fair representation in the most powerful legislative body in the world. Qué vergüenza. It’s a disgrace—not just to the Latino community, but to every Texan who believes in democracy.”
MALC has long raised concerns about mid-decade redistricting and the continued erosion of voting power for Latino communities across Texas. The maps passed in 2021 are still being challenged in federal court for diluting Latino representation. Rather than wait for a ruling, state leaders have chosen to move forward with a rushed process that could deepen the harm.
MALC members remain committed to putting Texas families first, especially those still recovering from the devastating July 4th floods. The Caucus will continue to fight for fair maps, equal representation, and a legislative process that honors, not undermines, democracy.
MALC and its legal team are reviewing the proposed map and will share additional analysis and comment at a later time.
